SUMMARY:EPA Climate Change and Children’s Health and Well-Being in the U.S. Report
DESCRIPTION:Our climate is changing\, and the health and well-being of children will continue to be affected in many ways. Children are uniquely vulnerable to climate change due to a variety of physical\, cognitive\, behavioral\, and social factors. Climate change-related impacts in childhood can have lifelong consequences due to effects on learning\, physical health\, chronic disease\, and other complications. \nThis national-scale\, multi-sector report quantifies projected health effects associated with extreme heat\, air quality\, changing seasons\, flooding\, and infectious diseases. Where possible\, the analyses consider the extent to which these risks disproportionately fall on children from overburdened populations. \nU.S. EPA will be hosting a webinar to introduce the EPA Climate Change and Children’s Health and Well-Being in the U.S. Report on May 22\, 2023\, from 2:30-3:30pm ET. \nEPA Climate Change and Children’s Health and Well-Being in the United States Report is a part of the Climate Change Impacts and Risk Analysis (CIRA) project\, a framework that quantifies and monetizes the impacts of climate change in the U.S. \nFor more information\, please visit https://www.epa.gov/cira. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Agriculture & Climate Impacts: A Discussion on the 2023 Farm Bill
DESCRIPTION:The science is clear: If we don’t reduce greenhouse gas emissions from food and farming\, we can’t avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Agriculture in America could become the leading source of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. \nCongress recently provided $20 billion in the Inflation Reduction Act to support farmers who adopt “climate-smart” practices\, including changes in fertilizer and manure management. Some members of Congress are seeking to divert this funding. The 2023 Farm Bill is a key opportunity to protect that investment and help make sure funding support is going to farmers and ranchers who are committed to reducing their emissions. Tune in for a discussion with Environmental Working Group on how agriculture impacts climate change\, why it matters\, and how nurses can get involved in climate advocacy around the 2023 Farm Bill. \nRegister in advance for this meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUof-2qpz8tGNEnSjFnQcsGeLzrzn7ByBmP \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

SUMMARY:Instagram LIVE - Author Talk with Sarah DiGregorio
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday\, April 28th at 12pm ET – on Instagram LIVE – for a lively conversation with author Sarah DiGregorio http://sarahdigregorio.com/ on her new book Taking Care! \n \nhttps://www.instagram.com/we.are.anhe/ \nPreorder book here \n“In Taking Care\, Sarah DiGregorio does the nearly impossible; seamlessly weaving together personal narratives and experiences while crafting a well-documented and researched book on the profession of nursing.”\n—Monica McLemore RN\, PhD\, University of Washington School of Nursing \n”Taking Care is a revelation! DiGregorio tracks the necessity of caretaking from Neolithic times to our present moment of political struggle and climate change. Through informed hands-on care\, patient advocacy\, and an ongoing quest for justice\, Taking Care shows that nurses make the world a better place.”\n—Theresa Brown\, RN\, The New York Times bestselling author of Healing: When a Nurse Becomes a Patient and The Shift: One Nurse\, Twelve Hours\, Four Patients’ Lives. \n  \nDescription: \nIn this sweeping cultural history of nursing from the Stone Age to the present\, the critically acclaimed author of Early pays homage to the profession and makes an urgent call for change. \nNurses have always been vital to human existence. A nurse was likely there when you were born and a nurse might well be there when you die. Familiar in hospitals and doctors’ offices\, these dedicated health professionals can also be found in schools\, prisons\, and people’s homes; at summer camps; on cruise ships\, and even at NASA. Yet despite being celebrated during the Covid-19 epidemic\, nurses are often undermined and undervalued in ways that reflect misogyny and racism\, and that extend to their working conditions–and affect the care available to everyone. But the potential power of nursing to create a healthier\, more just world endures. \nThe story of nursing is complicated. It is woven into war\, plague\, religion\, the economy\, and our individual lives in myriad ways. In Taking Care\, journalist Sarah DiGregorio chronicles the lives of nurses past and tells the stories of those today–caregivers at the vital intersection of health care and community who are actively changing the world\, often invisibly. An absorbing and empathetic work that combines storytelling with nuanced reporting\, Taking Care examines how we have always tried to care for each other–the incredible ways we have succeeded and the ways in which we have failed. Fascinating\, empowering and significant\, it is a call for change and a love letter to the nurses of yesterday\, today\, and tomorrow.

SUMMARY:ANHE Research Forum Monthly Call - February 2023
DESCRIPTION:February 23rd \, 2023 \n \nSpeaker: Jeannie Rodriguez\, PhD\, RN\, APRN\, Assistant Professor\nAssistant Director\, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Primary Care Program\, Project Lead\, SEEK Study\, Emory University Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing\, Atlanta\, Georgia \nTitle: The Metabolome of Passive ENDS Exposure in Kids (The M-PEEK Study) \nSummary: Jeannie Rodriguez (presenting)\, Irene Yang\, Donghai Liang\, Rachel Tchen\, and Bayan Hawsawi assessed the feasibility of non-invasive biomatrices to detect secondhand e-cigarette vapor exposure in children and describe parental perceptions of vaping. Overall\, sample-specific\, and feature-specific correlations were strong to moderate between blood and the non-invasive biomatrices. Fourteen significant features were annotated\, noting metabolites directly reflective of e-cigarette vapor exposure and metabolites of dopamine and oxidative stress\, likely representing downstream effects of exposure. Most parents began vaping to stop smoking and described vaping as a minor health hazard or not a hazard. Parent vapers described\nthe “power of addiction”\, “the appeal of vaping”\, and a “cycle of judgement”. \nRegister in advance for this meeting:

SUMMARY:American Academy of Nursing - The Nursing Leadership in Decarbonizing the US Health Sector Policy Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:The Nursing Leadership in Decarbonizing the US Health Sector Policy Dialogue will be held virtually on January 20th\, 2023 from 1:00 – 2:30 PM ET. Registration is open to Academy Fellows at no additional cost\, students at $25\, and non-members at $80. Nursing continuing professional development contact hours will be available for purchase at $25 (1.5 contact hours). Registration is required to attend and a recording will be available for registrants after the event. \nThis policy dialogue will be hosted by the Expert Panel on Environmental & Public Health. The US health sector contributes 8.5% of the total greenhouse gasses produced by the US. These greenhouse gasses produce climate change which adversely impacts the health of individuals\, especially vulnerable and economically challenged communities. In September 2021\, the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) launched the Action Collaborative to Decarbonize the US Health Sector (National Academy of Medicine\, 2021). In addition\, at the most recent UN sponsored Congress of the Parties (COP 26)\, 50 nations pledged to develop climate-resilient and low-carbon health systems (World Health Organization\, 2021). From making operational decisions about energy sources\, food\, and products to educating patients and advising policy makers\, nurses play a key role in advancing decarbonization. This policy dialogue will briefly review the health and environmental impacts of climate change and the urgent need for action\, introduce attendees to the sources of greenhouse gasses generated by the health sector (the three scopes of decarbonization)\, and promote dialogue about priority policy recommendations that nursing can champion and lead to expedite decarbonization (Dzau et al.\, 2021). \nPolicy Dialogue attendees will: \n\nAnalyze the impact of the US health care sector’s contributions to greenhouse gas emissions including operations (scope 1)\, purchased energy (scope 2); and the supply chain of services and health care products (scope 3).\nIdentify opportunities for nursing leadership in reducing carbon emissions generated by the health care sector.\nRecommend policies that nurses can lead to quickly advance decarbonization of the health sector in the four priority areas- health care supply chain\, health care delivery\, health professional education\, and policy\, financing\, and metrics.\n\nNursing Continuing Professional Development\nThe American Academy of Nursing is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Contact hours are awarded by the American Academy of Nursing following the completion of the virtual event and the post-conference evaluation. There are no relevant financial relationships identified for any individual in a position to control the content of this activity. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER
