Miller is founder and Executive Director of Alaska Community Action on Toxics (ACAT). ACAT is an environmental health and justice research\, policy\, and advocacy organization. She brings more than 30 years of research\, education\, and advocacy experience to her present work. She serves as Principal Investigator for community-based participatory research projects funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Pamela received a Meritorious Service Award from the University of Alaska and Alaska Conservation Foundation’s Olaus Murie Award in recognition of her “long-term outstanding professional contributions to the conservation movement in Alaska.” Prior to coming to Alaska\, she served as Ocean Issues Technical Coordinator for the Washington Department of Ecology and Director of a marine science education center at Nisqually Reach in southern Puget Sound. DESCRIPTION:February 23rd \, 2023 \n \nSpeaker: Jeannie Rodriguez\, PhD\, RN\, APRN\, Assistant Professor\nAssistant Director\, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Primary Care Program\, Project Lead\, SEEK Study\, Emory University Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing\, Atlanta\, Georgia \nTitle: The Metabolome of Passive ENDS Exposure in Kids (The M-PEEK Study) \nSummary: Jeannie Rodriguez (presenting)\, Irene Yang\, Donghai Liang\, Rachel Tchen\, and Bayan Hawsawi assessed the feasibility of non-invasive biomatrices to detect secondhand e-cigarette vapor exposure in children and describe parental perceptions of vaping. Overall\, sample-specific\, and feature-specific correlations were strong to moderate between blood and the non-invasive biomatrices. Fourteen significant features were annotated\, noting metabolites directly reflective of e-cigarette vapor exposure and metabolites of dopamine and oxidative stress\, likely representing downstream effects of exposure. Most parents began vaping to stop smoking and described vaping as a minor health hazard or not a hazard. Parent vapers described\nthe “power of addiction”\, “the appeal of vaping”\, and a “cycle of judgement”. \nRegister in advance for this meeting:

The focus of his research is the evaluation of preventive services delivered in the primary care setting. He currently serves as the Chair of the Evidence Review Workgroup for the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Advisory Committee on Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children and is the Deputy Editor of PEDIATRICS. DESCRIPTION:The Nursing Leadership in Decarbonizing the US Health Sector Policy Dialogue will be held virtually on January 20th\, 2023 from 1:00 – 2:30 PM ET. Registration is open to Academy Fellows at no additional cost\, students at $25\, and non-members at $80. Nursing continuing professional development contact hours will be available for purchase at $25 (1.5 contact hours). Registration is required to attend and a recording will be available for registrants after the event. \nThis policy dialogue will be hosted by the Expert Panel on Environmental & Public Health. The US health sector contributes 8.5% of the total greenhouse gasses produced by the US. These greenhouse gasses produce climate change which adversely impacts the health of individuals\, especially vulnerable and economically challenged communities. In September 2021\, the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) launched the Action Collaborative to Decarbonize the US Health Sector (National Academy of Medicine\, 2021). In addition\, at the most recent UN sponsored Congress of the Parties (COP 26)\, 50 nations pledged to develop climate-resilient and low-carbon health systems (World Health Organization\, 2021). From making operational decisions about energy sources\, food\, and products to educating patients and advising policy makers\, nurses play a key role in advancing decarbonization. This policy dialogue will briefly review the health and environmental impacts of climate change and the urgent need for action\, introduce attendees to the sources of greenhouse gasses generated by the health sector (the three scopes of decarbonization)\, and promote dialogue about priority policy recommendations that nursing can champion and lead to expedite decarbonization (Dzau et al.\, 2021). \nPolicy Dialogue attendees will: \n\nAnalyze the impact of the US health care sector’s contributions to greenhouse gas emissions including operations (scope 1)\, purchased energy (scope 2); and the supply chain of services and health care products (scope 3).\nIdentify opportunities for nursing leadership in reducing carbon emissions generated by the health care sector.\nRecommend policies that nurses can lead to quickly advance decarbonization of the health sector in the four priority areas- health care supply chain\, health care delivery\, health professional education\, and policy\, financing\, and metrics.\n\nNursing Continuing Professional Development\nThe American Academy of Nursing is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Contact hours are awarded by the American Academy of Nursing following the completion of the virtual event and the post-conference evaluation. Her research studies focus on environmental exposures as they relate to reproductive\, immune\, and cancer outcomes. Dr. Bell is currently the co-principal investigator of two cohort studies: the Upstate KIDS study\, which follows over 6\,000 children to identify potential risk factors for developmental health effects and the Health Study of New York State Communities Exposed to PFAS Contaminated Drinking Water\, funded by ATSDR as one of seven sites participating in the Multi-Site PFAS Health Study.
