SUMMARY:Climate Changes' Effect on Agriculture and Agriculture's Effect on Climate change
DESCRIPTION:Climate Changes’ Effect on Agriculture and Agriculture’s Effect on Climate change\nFor nurses who are interested in climate change\, it is critical to understanding how the food system impacts and is impacted by climate change. It is estimated that 25 – 30% of greenhouse gases are attributed to the global food system. While this webinar will explore how climate change-associated weather patterns\, extreme storms\, and extreme heat events threaten both plant-based and animal-sourced food\, we will also investigate how the predominant agricultural practices in the US are producing greenhouse gases\, employing millions of pounds of fossil fuel-derived chemicals (including pesticides)\, and destroying ecosystems. We will also look at climate impacts from meat consumption versus plant-based diets. And finally\, we will discuss nurses’ roles in making our food system more just and climate and eco-friendly. \nSpeaker: Barbara Sattler\, DrPH\, BS\, RN\, FAAN \nRegister Today! https://zurl.co/KWyV

SUMMARY:ANHE Policy and Advocacy Forum Monthly Call - July 11\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:In Fall 2023\, the Environmental Protection Agency proposed a plan to pursue the Biden administration’s priority of replacing all lead service lines in the next ten years. Nurses know that access to safe lead-free drinking water is essential for families to live healthy and productive lives\, as there is no safe level of lead. Communities across the country should be protected from exposure to lead and health care providers are a key part of lead exposure prevention. This webinar aims to provide resources for the clinician as well as highlight areas for nursing advocacy and action. 1 hour CE will be offered by ANHE. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:ANHE Policy Advocacy Forum Monthly Call - June 2024
DESCRIPTION:PFAS: Federal Drinking Water Standards & Opportunities for Nursing Action\nThursday June 6\, 2024 3 PM – 4 PM EST \nThis webinar will be recorded and sent to all those who register. 1 hour of nursing CE will be provided. Registration is required to obtain CE. \nRegister Here\nWebinar Description: The Environmental Protection Agency recently finalized national primary drinking water standards for 6 PFAS. This is the first-ever national\, legally enforceable\, scientifically supported drinking water standard to protect communities from exposure to harmful per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)\, also known as ‘forever chemicals.’ Most people are exposed to mixtures of PFAS and there is sufficient evidence that certain PFAS are associated with health outcomes including decreased antibody responses and dyslipidemia in both adults and children as well as decreased infant and fetal growth and increased risk of kidney cancer in adults. As public drinking water systems come into compliance with the new standards\, nurses and health care providers will likely be asked by patients and those in their communities\, about the health effects of PFAS and about PFAS in drinking water. This webinar is intended to discuss resources\, including ANHE’s PFAS Toolkit\, and advocacy opportunities for the clinician. This will be a 1 hour panel webinar including 4 speakers who are well-established successful PFAS advocates. \nSpeakers:\nDr. Katie Pelch\, Toxics Team in Environmental Health\, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC)\nSarah Woodbury\, Vice President of Policy and Advocacy\, Defend Our Health\nAvonna Stark\, Minnesota State Director\, Clean Water Action Minnesota\nSophia Longsworth – Clean and Healthy NY \nObjectives: \n\nSummarize the known and potential health impacts from exposure to PFAS through drinking water.\nDescribe EPA’s most recent national public drinking water standards regarding PFAS.\nDiscuss federal\, state and local PFAS advocacy opportunities in which nurses\, health workers and clinicians can engage.\nReview which strategies were successful in passing state-level PFAS legislation noting any barriers.\n\n1 hour of Nursing Continuing Education (CE) credits will be available to participants who complete an evaluation and receive at least 80% on post-test.

SUMMARY:EPA Climate Change and Children’s Health and Well-Being in the U.S. Report
DESCRIPTION:Our climate is changing\, and the health and well-being of children will continue to be affected in many ways. Children are uniquely vulnerable to climate change due to a variety of physical\, cognitive\, behavioral\, and social factors. Climate change-related impacts in childhood can have lifelong consequences due to effects on learning\, physical health\, chronic disease\, and other complications. \nThis national-scale\, multi-sector report quantifies projected health effects associated with extreme heat\, air quality\, changing seasons\, flooding\, and infectious diseases. Where possible\, the analyses consider the extent to which these risks disproportionately fall on children from overburdened populations. \nU.S. EPA will be hosting a webinar to introduce the EPA Climate Change and Children’s Health and Well-Being in the U.S. Report on May 22\, 2023\, from 2:30-3:30pm ET. \nEPA Climate Change and Children’s Health and Well-Being in the United States Report is a part of the Climate Change Impacts and Risk Analysis (CIRA) project\, a framework that quantifies and monetizes the impacts of climate change in the U.S. \nFor more information\, please visit https://www.epa.gov/cira. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Agriculture & Climate Impacts: A Discussion on the 2023 Farm Bill
DESCRIPTION:The science is clear: If we don’t reduce greenhouse gas emissions from food and farming\, we can’t avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Agriculture in America could become the leading source of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. \nCongress recently provided $20 billion in the Inflation Reduction Act to support farmers who adopt “climate-smart” practices\, including changes in fertilizer and manure management. Some members of Congress are seeking to divert this funding. The 2023 Farm Bill is a key opportunity to protect that investment and help make sure funding support is going to farmers and ranchers who are committed to reducing their emissions. Tune in for a discussion with Environmental Working Group on how agriculture impacts climate change\, why it matters\, and how nurses can get involved in climate advocacy around the 2023 Farm Bill. \nRegister in advance for this meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUof-2qpz8tGNEnSjFnQcsGeLzrzn7ByBmP \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

DiGregorio tracks the necessity of caretaking from Neolithic times to our present moment of political struggle and climate change. Through informed hands-on care\, patient advocacy\, and an ongoing quest for justice\, Taking Care shows that nurses make the world a better place.”\n—Theresa Brown\, RN\, The New York Times bestselling author of Healing: When a Nurse Becomes a Patient and The Shift: One Nurse\, Twelve Hours\, Four Patients’ Lives. \n  \nDescription: \nIn this sweeping cultural history of nursing from the Stone Age to the present\, the critically acclaimed author of Early pays homage to the profession and makes an urgent call for change. \nNurses have always been vital to human existence. A nurse was likely there when you were born and a nurse might well be there when you die. Familiar in hospitals and doctors’ offices\, these dedicated health professionals can also be found in schools\, prisons\, and people’s homes; at summer camps; on cruise ships\, and even at NASA. Yet despite being celebrated during the Covid-19 epidemic\, nurses are often undermined and undervalued in ways that reflect misogyny and racism\, and that extend to their working conditions–and affect the care available to everyone. But the potential power of nursing to create a healthier\, more just world endures. \nThe story of nursing is complicated. It is woven into war\, plague\, religion\, the economy\, and our individual lives in myriad ways. In Taking Care\, journalist Sarah DiGregorio chronicles the lives of nurses past and tells the stories of those today–caregivers at the vital intersection of health care and community who are actively changing the world\, often invisibly. An absorbing and empathetic work that combines storytelling with nuanced reporting\, Taking Care examines how we have always tried to care for each other–the incredible ways we have succeeded and the ways in which we have failed. Fascinating\, empowering and significant\, it is a call for change and a love letter to the nurses of yesterday\, today\, and tomorrow.
