Carbon budget
This is a wonderful graphic that you can use in your slide presentations to visualize the world carbon budget. Everyone can understand “blow the budget” though for me “stay within the budget” is something I get very well deserved suggestions about from the household CFO. Go to Carbon Budget.
Potpourri
Greenland – 270 billion tons of ice seems like a lot to me. Maybe an instance where we are thankful for water retention? Go to Greenland. Green Men – We of the Y chromosome have so many things to work on. Probably best for me to say nothing other than let’s add to the list this to think about: go to Men Resist Green Behavior. ecoAmerica – A lot of good stuff at the ecoAmerica site. Check out the December poll. Change is slow, but in the right direction, inexorable, like a moving glacier. Go to ecoAmerica. Research – For all you researchers out there look at the All of Us Project at NIH. Go to All. Ok – I am not a researcher other than trying to figure out what my kids are talking about, but this looks very interesting.
Resolutions
It is one week into the new year and you already know you will fail at those personal resolutions – eat better, exercise more, be patient, think good thoughts, finally read Don Quixote, and floss every day. Be brave. Get out your Sharpie marker and cross them out. Instead do these:
There are five ANHE workgroups (go to ANHE) – during the next 12 months join one call from two of the groups. Pick two groups. Join each at least once. How hard was that? Easier than flossing.
Let’s grow ANHE. Get one colleague to go to the web site. Look over their shoulder to make sure they explore a bit and actually sign up for the newsletter. Give them an extra pat on the back if they take a peek at the eText. Well, that takes maybe 20 minutes? Certainly quicker than working your way to page 60 of DQ and reading about the windmills.
Write an opinion piece. Maybe an op-ed. Maybe a blog. Maybe something on social media (I have no idea what that entails, but I bet you do). Write something that pushes the envelope. Nurses are the most trusted profession and are obligated to speak out. Ok, this one takes a little more time. However, you had already changed your plan for 5 days a week at the gym to 2 days, so use the other three to write your piece.
Ask a question to a candidate. There are 500,000 elected positions in the united states and all are important. That person running for recreation district board may be the governor in your grandchild’s state 25 years from now. Primary season is the best time to ask a question. Remember, this task is scary but not dangerous. There are things that are dangerous but apparently not scary, like global warming, and therefore you have to ask the question. Reward yourself – this one substitutes for that eat better resolution, splurge, get a latte with whole milk instead of skim.
Carbon Footprint
I know many of you have used a web site to calculate your carbon footprint. Which one(s) do you like best? Easiest to use? Most accurate – it calculates your footprint and not your toe print? Let me know and we will publish the ones you recommend.
