…..Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don’t stand in the doorway
Don’t block up the hall….

Nursing Summit on Environmental Health

This year the summit will be in Nashville on May 6 and 7 in association with the annual CleanMed Conference. Titled “Calling All Nurses: Leading the Way to Healthy Environments”. Registration will be at the CleanMed site. So pencil in the date. What is the digital equivalent of penciling in the date?

Creative Nursing – Katie Huffling Guest Editor

Call for papers – Creative Nursing: A Journal of Values, Issues, Experience, and Collaboration. The theme for 2019 is Professional Practice in a Changing World and issue three will focus on nursing practice related to climate change. ANHE’s executive director Katie Huffling is the guest editor for this issue. External (unsolicited articles) deadline Feb. 1, 2019.  Publication date Aug. 15, 2019. Contact Katie for more info – katie@envirn.org

Food

I am working on my PHD – post holiday diet. Fudge the old old way, homemade fruit cake, Yule bread, tons of sugar. No HbA1c test for me for a few months. On a more positive note Barb Sattler is leading a new initiative in ANHE regarding food and the environment – Energy, Waste, Pesticides, Water, Climate Change, etc. This will  be a great vehicle to learn, teach, and engage with policy makers. Let us know your interest and we will get you on the discussion list. A brief reminder – Reducing food waste is Number 3 on the Drawdown list of strategies to reduce climate change. Go to Food Waste.

Legislatures

Your state legislature is meeting, or is about to. Go to NCSL. Though because of that football game it is unclear what Louisiana will do. NCSL also provides a quick link that shows your state legislature leadership at Leadership. So if you have trouble figuring out who represents you, know that the leadership is beholden to all. Google their name, e.g. “Tom state of Jefferson legislature” and you will likely get his web site and email link. Send him a note. Don’t do “Tom” and there is no Jefferson state. But you get the point.

Podcasts

Beth Schenk has started the Podcast year with two nice pieces with Jasmine Travers and Patrice Nicholas. Go to ANHE Podcast. As I have mentioned before there is a way to listen to the Podcasts with that thingee on your phone, but alas….

Fellow Project

We are pleased to announce that ANHE, with generous funding support from the Kresge Foundation, will be creating a new environmental health nurse fellowship program to begin summer 2019. With this program, ANHE will train the first cohort of 30 nurses in a yearlong fellowship on pressing environmental health issues and provide them with the knowledge and support needed to make positive change in their communities.  More information and application guidelines to come.

Mercury

Keeping up with the Environmental PROTECTION Agency is difficult. Why is it so hard to see that Mercury is bad for us? Go to Mercury.

Climate Change Potpourri

Take the CHANT survey at ANHE CHANT. A public health emergency at Scientific American and at NEJM. Saddle up for the Green New Deal. Still getting worser and worser at Carbon Emissions and Carbon Emissions II.
