Dangers of Cleaning Products
Many cleaning products contain substances that can have dangerous health effects. Some of the ingredients that can have a major effect on human health are formaldehyde, 1,4- dioxane, and borax or boric acid. Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen that can form in products due to the mixing of certain chemicals. 1,4-dioxane is a probable human carcinogen. Borax or boric acid is considered to be toxic to the human reproductive system. Boric acid can be found in laundry and dishwashing detergent as well as many other cleaners.
There are many other harmful ingredients that can be found in cleaning products that worsen asthma and allergies. They can also lead to irritation, and some, when exposed to the skin, eyes, or if ingested, are poisonous and can cause burns. Many labels do not provide enough information for customers to truly know what they are purchasing. To learn more in depth information on certain dangerous substances in cleaning products and their health effects, the EWG's guide to healthy cleaning is a good resource.
