Paint can contain many dangerous chemicals including Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) or lead (in homes built before 1978). To learn more about the dangers of VOCs and lead, which can be released by paint, click the links above.

Fumes from paint can cause the following short-term effects:

  • Eye, nose, and throat irritation
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Nausea
  • Trouble breathing

After a long period of exposure to high concentrations of VOCs, long term effects such as damage to the liver, kidney, and nervous system can occur. Indoor VOCs can be much more concentrated, and many products we are surrounded by contain VOCs, so it is important to limit our exposure as much as possible.
