EnviRN News – August 8, 2019

August 8, 2019

“It’s too darn hot,
It’s too darn hot.”
(Ella Fitzgerald recording is the best)

Cooking the Earth

Does anyone think we are not boiling the world? Take a look at David Wallace-Wells book The Uninhabitable Earth or much shorter version in the New York Magazine. Go to “It is, I promise, worse than you think.” June 2019 was the hottest on record, go to: June. But wait, could it get worse, ah, now we have July info coming in, go to: July. Since we have no air conditioning in our home I have to work hard to avoid the angry comments from my family. I wear head phones at all times in the house.

Food and the Environment

Barb Sattler and her team have a monthly webinar series – What All Nurses Need to Know About Food, Agriculture, and Health. Pesticides, Sustainability, Climate Change, and more. The next one is September 9. Go to: Agriculture and Climate Change. As we type this the new UN full report about food and climate change is not yet on line at UN and Food but the report is in the news in your newspaper (do they still exist). For the NYT version go to: Food and Climate Change.

PEHSU

Go to the PEHSU link below and work your way to the Grand Rounds which this month is about Herbal Products and Related Toxicity.

Green Your Practice

ANHE has developed a nice partnership to help outpatient settings green their practice. You may have heard Todd Sack on one of the ANHE monthly calls. For information, tools, and much more go to: My Green Doctor. On the big big practice front much thanks to Claudia for telling us about the study of large health care organizations and their sustainability, go to Corporations.

Podcasts

You probably spent July trying to cool off or looking for your old physics textbook to read about wet bulb temperature so you could calculate when you would die. Therefore you might have missed the latest ANHE podcast. Go to: Indoor Air with Azita Amiri and Beth Schenk.

EPA

I suspect you are bored and in need of an issue to think about at the federal level. The McCarthy and Bernstein piece in NEJM will give you something to think about, go to: NEJM.

Conferences and Webinars and Such

APHA Annual Conference 11/2-11/6 – APHA
Climate Change and Nursing Video Series – Video
CEHN Protecting Children’s Environmental Health – Blueprint Series
PEHSU National Classroom – PEHSU Webinars and Modules

A couple other things.

Thing one – some of you have asked about publishing in the newsletter. Like the Ramones this newsletter is short and loud. Get your piece published somewhere on line and let us know the link. If you need help finding a place to publish contact ANHE staff. If you have a scholarly piece, contact the ANHE education work group.

Thing two – late with the newsletter, but like the famously showed up late for work band Sweetwater I have no good excuse. Would like to blame the heat. Maybe the night time heat? Look up your city at Night Time.

Be Well!
